This collection features recent piano pieces by four American women composers. I confirmed my decision to record these compositions last year, when on several occasions, live performances of these pieces were embraced by enthusiastic audiences.
Masterful and captivating, these compositions represent a wide spectrum of stylistic viewpoints. I'lana Cotton takes modal harmonies and popular rhythms as her point of departure. Mary Jeanne van Appledorn and Hilary Tann fulfill their penchant for the lyrical, romantic gesture. A neo-classical patina envelops Binnette Lipper's well-balanced structures.
Great care was exercised during the entire recording process to capture the natural ambience of the concert hall and the extremely wide dynamic range of the music. Please use a moderate volume setting when playing this disc.
